Root kit

Here's the definition of a root kit, why they are so dangerous (not just for your computer...but for your personal information/privacy), and some solutions.

Microsoft last week acknowledged the existence of root kits, and a tool - this has made big news of late. However the tool at the end of the article above is far superior.

Here's hoping other detection tools are released too.

Mobile Phone Virus Found in United States

Surprise, surprise. Again, another reason I DON'T want my toaster to have an e-mail address.

It might become infected with the "Over-Toast.tst" virus and burn every slice no matter what I do.

Exploit code targets two Microsoft flaws

There are already patches for both flaws, this post is informational only.

Interestingly, this article goes on to explain how one of the flaws could be exploited via MSN Messenger, that passes through all current layers of security, potentially undetected.

Most anti-virus vendors have released definition updates already.

Still...good read!!

Wow, when those hormone rage - they REALLY rage.

Microsoft's Security Chief Says Windows Safer Than Linux

Well, um, YAH, of course he's going to say that.

Reminds me of a TDK rep I heard who said "...if you do it right, you can make a tape sound just as good as a CD."

As if either one of them would actually state that someone else's (competetive) technology is better in any way...yeesh.
"Yahoo! Toolbar Beta for Mozilla Firefox

Adds some good features. Yahoo! doesn't want to be left behind...good on 'em for recognizing the emerging market.

This is a pretty nerdy article on MySQL performance.

Interesting, though, if you're at all keen on the various hosting platforms. The top performer might surprise you :)

I think my colleagues and I should endevour for such highly acclaimed credentials.
Symantec flaw leaves opening for viruses

Nothing like one of the world's largest anti-virus/security companies being targeted by code specifically designed to deactivate said anti-virus/security mechanism.

That's kind of like HAVING a fridge, and plugging it in - but someone left the door open all day.

Oops!

Bill sets fine for low-riding pants

Looks like the state of Virginia has hired fashion police.
Carly Fiorina forced out at HP

Hm. Well HP has been a bit shakey since the Compaq takeover/merger. I guess the board wasn't groovin' to Fiorina's style, so they voted her out.

Fiorina is easily one of the most influential and powerful women in the corporate world.

This is touted to be a "meltdown-proof" reactor - the first new design of a nuclear-powered reactor in over 20 years. This puts China way ahead in this technology.

'Trek: Enterprise' to end in May

This is it...no more first run Star Trek on TV anymore.

(sob)Well, I'll miss the show...but not the theme music.
Don't dial it, jiggle it

I love it - cell phones are waaaay overdue for something like this, something actually useful. And no, I don't find a web-enabled cell that useful - heck, I just wanna make a phone call, and maybe receive the odd phone call. "Text-ting" ain't all that if you're in a car or have ever used a QWERTY keyboard. It just takes too long.

Shaking a cell to dial number, now that sounds like something most of us could actually benefit from.

Gallery Software

Just as the name implies. A review site of various software, retail and open source, that will, in some way or another, create a gallery or galleries from your photos.

I mostly just wanted to send this to myself so I can review it from home. Blogging is easier...and someone may get some use from it :)
Kazaagate Day 15: part 2

I allllways knew Kazaa was evil. I have never used it, not once. The legal system thinks it's evil, too. Our reasoning is different, well sort of - the legal system (sometimes AKA MPAA or related) thinks Kazaa is evil because ANY type of media can be easily shared and distributed, and I think it's evil because of all the spyware and crud it installs.

Find out the real evil behind Kazaa...which, as revealed, is bit of both of the above, according to company memos and documentation.

Not doing anything this weekend? Maybe you can design the replacement to the Space Shuttle.

If this is a viable technology, it could revolutionize computers and computing as we know it.

If it sells, that is :)
Can-Spam Increased Spam

No surprise. We all felt it. This is another /. article, with a link to a NY Times article...but for a quick (and scary) graph, it's here.

Spammers have been singing "I fought the law, and I won"

Anxious times in the cartoon underground

Are ya an anime fan? I used to watch Speed Racer...since then anime has existed in the back of my mind as one of those "gotta check it out" items.

Here's a bit of news in the mostly-quiet world of anime - and it's not entirely good.
Microsoft launches search engine to compete with Google

Yep, it's here. The full release version of MSN's search engine.

You can find it here - personally, I find it hasn't changed much from the orginal MSN site...except there are links above the search field that look oddly like Google's...eg, News, Images, Desktop(Beta) - makes one wonder where they are getting their cues from :) Actually, MSN is not in denial at all...they are looking hard for a share of what Google is doing.
